Welcome,
The herd at Coldstream is relatively young, but the plan to build it has been in my head for quite a while. With an understanding of, and goal to use EPD's & Genomics to move a small herd of Shorthorns ahead, specific purchases were made from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Indiana and Ohio to start a herd. The first calf crop was the result of planned matings to bulls both north & south of the border, and this has been followed by use of both walking bulls, AI & Embryos.
A few cattle are exhibited at local shows and some good folks in the breed are now counted as friends. Birth, weaning and yearling weights are taken and heifers with our prefix are working their way into production. These cattle live outside 365 days a year and winter protection comes in the form of a 140 foot deep valley in an 8 acre field. Protection from the wind & a straw pack keep the cows content. We have recently added a farm, with a barn for calving. Round bales of hay are fed from December through April & cattle usually see pasture late in May.
Visitors are welcome and time spent with interested cattlemen usually results in a learning experience for us. Breeding cattle are available by private treaty here at the farm.
